Bonnie returns often with brush and sumi ink to the theme of the cosmos. Far away from the political churn of the every day, stretched into time and space, she finds herself in a place where she can lean against the heart of mystery and listen to the universe deeply breathing.
Bonnie's print work is full of circles, arcs, and orbits, undulations and pulsing lines. She believes that what goes on in the universe goes on in our own bodies, that we are all made of the stuff of stars.
Her encaustic work most recently presents her personal photographic imagery from places along the Niagara escarpment – cedar trees and ferns, flowing water and fens. She is almost convinced that trees are sentient beings that communicate with each other for the common good.
Putting words and pictures together in meaningful ways has been the work of most of her career. Schooled as a printmaker and trained as a graphic artist, Bonnie de Arteaga presents prints, drawings, sculpture and encaustic mixed media layered with wordplay and metaphoric imagery. Science and belief systems are recurring themes. Her new work explores living within nature’s sacred spaces.
